Byron is spoilt. On one side you've got the beaches — Wategos, Tallows, the lighthouse standing over all of it — and twenty minutes inland it turns into green hills, old fig trees and beautiful farm venues. Most wedding regions give you one good backdrop. Byron gives you a dozen, all within a short drive of each other.
I live just up the road, and I've been photographing weddings for fourteen years — more than nine hundred of them now, a good share in and around Byron. Venues like The Fig Tree and Earthhouse are second homes at this point. I know where the best locations are and what time to go where.
HOW I shoot
For most of the day I shoot quietly and let things unfold as naturally as possible. The comment I hear most at the end of the night is some version of “we barely noticed you were there,” which I take as the job done properly.
The exception is the portrait session. Being photographed is awkward for almost everyone, and a wedding is often the first time a couple has real photos taken together. So for that part of the day I'll guide you — where to stand, where the light is, when to just walk and ignore me. It's twenty or thirty minutes, it's relaxed, and it's usually the part couples were dreading that ends up being fun.
The result is a gallery that's mostly honest documentary work, with a handful of landscape frames and editorial-style images. Byron is very good for those.

Deux Belettes
French countryside dropped into the hinterland — gardens, hedges, and interiors that photograph like nowhere else in the region.
Ewingsdale Hall
The little white weatherboard church hall on the hill — simple, timeless and full of light. A Byron classic that never dates in photos.
Fig Tree Restaurant
Up on the hill with the ocean in the distance, a 150-year-old fig in the middle of it all, and food that guests still talk about later. Late afternoon light here is as good as it gets in the region.
Hidden in the hills past Bangalow. Ceremony under the fig, reception in the Mediterranean-style hall, and total seclusion — no traffic noise, no onlookers, just your people.

A private villa on the hill with sweeping views over the hinterland — stay the weekend, marry on the lawn, and watch the sun drop from the terrace.

PORTRAITS where and when
You don't need a shot list of famous spots. What matters is what's near your venue and where the light will be at your portrait time. But since you're wondering:
If you're getting married in town or on the coast, Wategos and Tallows are classics for a reason. Tallows gives you kilometres of empty sand and dunes, and Little Wategos is the one to walk into if you want privacy and some dramatic rocky escarpments. If you're in the hinterland, the honest answer is that the best portraits are usually on the venue's own land — the right paddock at golden hour beats a forty-minute drive to a lookout every time.

Do you shoot Byron Bay elopements?
Yes, happily. Beach, headland or hinterland, whether it’s just the two of you or a dozen people. Shorter coverage suits elopements and the pricing page has the details.
Have you shot at our venue?
If it’s listed above, many times — follow the link to see my venue guide, photographs from the property, and any complete weddings I’ve published there. If it’s somewhere new, I’ll scout it beforehand. Either way, you’re not paying for my learning curve.
What if it rains?
We’ll have a plan before the day — every good Byron venue has covered options, and soft grey light is easier to shoot in than harsh sun. I’d rather have drama in the sky than a flat blue one.
Do you do video?
No, but I know some amazing videographers, and I really advocate hiring them directly if you want to be sure who you will be getting and whether they can deliver what you want.
