Tweed Valley Wedding Photographer

I grew up on a farm at Tumbulgum. This valley isn't somewhere I travel to — it's home.

Tweed Valley weddings tend to have a different rhythm from weddings in the city. There is more space. Guests often stay for the weekend. Ceremonies take place beneath trees, beside paddocks or overlooking the mountains. Drinks stretch into the afternoon, dinner is served in a barn or pavilion, and nobody is in much of a hurry to leave.

The valley suits couples who want their wedding to feel beautiful without becoming overly formal. You can create something elegant here, but the landscape keeps it grounded.

It is also surprisingly accessible. The northern end of the valley is close to Gold Coast Airport and the Tweed Coast, while venues farther inland offer the feeling of being completely removed from the outside world. For guests travelling from elsewhere, the wedding can easily become part of a longer stay — there are beaches to the east, rainforest and national parks to the west, and small towns, restaurants, markets and swimming spots throughout the region.

Tumbulgum occupies a special place within the valley for me, because it is where I grew up. The village sits where the Tweed and Rous rivers meet, surrounded by farmland and with the mountains rising behind it. It is small, quiet and closely connected to the landscape around it.

Although many of the larger wedding venues are farther into the hills, Tumbulgum and the surrounding northern valley can also be beautiful places for wedding portraits, smaller celebrations and accommodation.

Photographing weddings in this part of the Tweed often brings back the feeling of growing up here: the changing light over the fields, the humidity before rain, the hills appearing and disappearing beneath clouds, and the stillness that settles over the roads late in the afternoon.

The Tweed Valley does not end when the hills reach the sea. To the east, the Tweed Coast runs through Fingal Head, Kingscliff, Cabarita, Hastings Point and Pottsville. It has the same sense of space as the valley, but the landscape changes from farms and rainforest to long beaches, rocky headlands, pandanus trees and open ocean.

There are stretches of this coastline that still feel remarkably empty. Even close to the coastal towns, it is possible to find quiet beaches, windswept headlands and places where the only visible signs of development are a few distant rooftops. For wedding photographs, the coast offers a completely different atmosphere from the hinterland while still feeling unmistakably part of the Tweed.

Fingal Head is one of the most distinctive locations in the region. Its small white lighthouse sits above the ocean at the end of a path through coastal vegetation, with beaches extending on either side of the headland. It is simple, exposed and beautiful, particularly when the afternoon light begins to soften.

Farther south, Cabarita and Hastings Point offer broad beaches, rocky outcrops and elevated views along the coastline. These are places where photographs can feel expansive and cinematic without requiring an elaborate setup. The wind, changing clouds and movement of the ocean do much of the work.

The coast also has wedding and reception venues with a more relaxed, seaside character. Babalou in Kingscliff offers an intimate coastal setting close to the beach, while Halcyon House at Cabarita brings together distinctive design, accommodation and one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in northern New South Wales.

A Tweed Coast wedding can be entirely coastal, or it can combine the two sides of the region. You might prepare near the beach, hold the ceremony on a headland and then travel inland for the reception. Alternatively, guests can stay along the coast while the wedding takes place among the hills.

That closeness is one of the great strengths of the Tweed. Within a relatively small area, you can move from surf beaches and open headlands to rivers, farms and rainforest-covered mountains.

For me, the coast and valley have always belonged to the same landscape. Growing up at Tumbulgum meant having the river and farmland around me, with the beaches of the Tweed Coast never far away. Photographing weddings here often feels like working among different parts of the same home.

The Tweed Valley offers scale without making people disappear inside the scenery. There are mountains, enormous skies and wide rural landscapes, but there are also verandas, rainforest paths, old sheds, creeks and quiet pockets of light. The best photographs often bring those two qualities together: the grandeur of the location and the closeness of the people within it.

The weather gives the valley much of its character. Mist can sit low over the hills in the morning. Clouds gather around Wollumbin. Rain moves through quickly, leaving deep greens and clear light behind it. I do not need every wedding day to be cloudless — some of the most atmospheric photographs happen when the weather is changing.

My approach is relaxed, candid and documentary-led. I will offer direction when it is useful, but I do not want the wedding to become an extended photoshoot. You should be able to spend time with the people who came to celebrate with you. The landscape matters, but it should support the story of the day rather than overwhelm it.

There is no single perfect season for a Tweed Valley wedding. The warmer months bring lush landscapes, long afternoons and dramatic skies. The cooler months are often clearer and more comfortable, particularly for outdoor ceremonies and receptions.

Whatever time of year you choose, it is worth having a wet-weather plan you genuinely like. The Tweed is green because rain is part of the landscape. A good barn, pavilion or veranda should feel like an appealing alternative, not somewhere everyone will reluctantly retreat to.

It is also wise to leave some breathing room in the schedule. Roads through the valley can be winding, weather can change quickly, and the sun may disappear behind the hills earlier than expected. A flexible timeline allows the day to unfold naturally.

Because I grew up on a farm at Tumbulgum, photographing a wedding in the Tweed Valley feels personal to me. I know the character of the region and understand its many little secrets and moods.
