Summergrove sits on 73 private acres at Carool, high above the Tweed Coast with views across the hinterland and towards the ocean. Couples can choose between the white chapel and an outdoor garden ceremony, followed by a reception in the modern barn. Onsite villas, a dedicated beauty room, a swimming pool, tennis court, vineyard, olive groves and orchards make it feel more like a small country resort than a venue used for a single afternoon.

It feels removed from the coast but is only 15 kilometres from Gold Coast Airport, with Coolangatta and the southern beaches close by. That combination makes it particularly convenient for weddings with interstate guests or anyone wanting to turn the celebration into a longer stay.

The estate is bright and open rather than moody, which suits a wedding that runs long into the evening — the barn takes over as soon as the light goes.

PHOTOGRAPHING a wedding at SUMMERGROVE

Summergrove is open, bright and expansive. The chapel has strong symmetry, a chandelier and a large picture window behind the altar, while outside there are distant coastal views, rolling hills, old trees, timber fences and long driveways. The grounds provide plenty of variety without needing to leave the estate.

The late-afternoon light along the fence line and open paddocks is particularly good, especially when there is a little haze over the coast. The fig tree gives shade and texture earlier in the day, and the chapel and barn provide clean interior options when the weather is less cooperative.

The one thing I would protect is fifteen minutes in the vineyard after the formalities. It is a two-minute walk from the barn and it is where the best portraits of the day usually happen.
