The Fig Tree is a converted farmhouse on a hill at Ewingsdale, ten minutes inland from Byron. You come up past the grapevines, the olive grove and the orchard, and then the ground opens out to the thing everyone comes for — a 150-year-old Moreton Bay fig that frames the ceremony area, with rolling green hills behind it and the ocean, Julian Rocks and the Cape Byron lighthouse out on the horizon.

The day moves through the whole property rather than sitting in one spot. Ceremony under the fig, then guests walk down through the olive grove to the pool for cocktails and canapés, then into the restaurant for dinner as the light goes. Che, the head chef and owner, runs the kitchen on produce from the property's own gardens and from growers around Byron — which is why the food at a Fig Tree wedding tastes like a restaurant's rather than a caterer's.

It is a boutique venue, not a big one, and that is the point. Everyone fits under the tree. Everyone can hear the vows.

PHOTOGRAPHING a wedding at the FIG TREE

The Fig Tree is the hero feature, but the entire grounds are stunningly beautiful, and the views that give out to Julian Rocks are unmatched in the region.

The sun sets behind the restaurant, so sunset on the back road is perfect, and a few steps from the back door. Then there's William Flick Lane, a three-minute drive around the corner, which is a wonderland of giant figs overhanging the road, and small forests and cottages.

Inside, the restaurant is glass on the view side and strung with festoons — it goes warm and close after dark, which suits a dance floor. Because guests come by bus, everyone arrives and leaves together, so nothing gets missed.
