Kooroomba weddingsMount Alford, Scenic Rim

Kooroomba sits in the Fassifern Valley at Mount Alford, surrounded by vineyards, lavender fields and the mountains of the Scenic Rim. Its defining feature is the open-air chapel: a contemporary timber structure that borrows the shape and language of a small Queensland country church without enclosing the ceremony from the landscape. Receptions are held in the restaurant and on the terrace overlooking the property.

The venue is around 65 minutes from Brisbane, 35 minutes from Ipswich and an hour and 45 minutes from the Gold Coast. It feels properly rural, but it is still close enough for guests to travel from Brisbane or stay around Boonah and make a weekend of it.

The lavender is what everyone comes for, but it is seasonal — worth asking the venue what will be in flower on your date before you plan the portraits around it.

PHOTOGRAPHING a wedding at KOOROOMBA

The chapel does most of the initial work. Its exposed timber framework creates strong lines and repeating shapes, while the open sides keep the vineyard and mountains present throughout the ceremony. It can be photographed as a building, as a frame around the couple, or almost as part of the landscape.

Beyond the chapel there are vineyard rows, lavender, olive trees, long grasses and broad Scenic Rim views. The lavender is the obvious feature, but the venue does not depend on it; the stronger photographs often come from the contrast between the structured vines, the rougher country around them and the distant mountain layers.

After dark the chapel is worth going back to. Lit from inside, standing alone above the rows, it makes the one frame you cannot get anywhere else.
